The HIV pandemic and the risk of mother to child transmission of HIV through breastfeeding pose unique challenges to promotion of breastfeeding.
It is important to promote HIV Individual Counseling and Testing among all pregnant and lactating women.
The absolute risk of HIV transmission through breastfeeding for more than one year, globally between 10% and 20%, needs to be balanced against increased risk of mortality and morbidity when infants are not breastfed.
Mixed feeding (breastfeeding and breast milk replacement feeding) in the first six months increases risks of HIV transmission.
